The Unkindest Cut

Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS… there is a surprise. The United States has been engaging in the systematic mutilation of young male babies for decades, but now we have a mandate – HIV and AIDS. Before, in the late 19th century circumcision was routinely applied because the the foreskin was seen as “the principal cause of masturbation.”
“In either case he looks upon the prepuce … as the principal cause of masturbation. … In children who have not yet the suggestions of sexual desire imparted by the presence of the spermatic fluid, the presence of the prepuce seems to anticipate those promptings. Circumcised boys may … be found to practice onanism, but in general the practice can be asserted as being very rare among the children of circumcised races, showing the less irritability of the organs in the class; neither in infancy are they as liable to priapism during sleep as those that are uncircumcised” – Dr. Peter Charles Remondino

I can assure you that the lack of a foreskin has never, and will never curb the “evil” practice of masturbation. As Woody Allen put it… “it is sex with someone you love.”

So now “public health officials” want to use the practice as a preventative effort to curb the spread of AIDS and HIV They “are also considering whether the surgery should be offered to adult heterosexual men whose sexual practices put them at high risk of infection. But they acknowledge that a circumcision drive in the United States would be unlikely to have a drastic impact: the procedure does not seem to protect those at greatest risk here, men who have sex with men.”

Along the same line of thinking we should remove the mammary glands of all young girls so they will not develop breast cancer, perhaps the lungs of individuals so they won’t get lung cancer if they opt to smoke three packs a day, or let’s mandate female circumcision. If we mutilate all female babies and remove the sexual pleasure centers of their genitalia they would most likely be less apt to engage in sexual behaviors that could lead to contracting HIV or AIDS.

Here is a novel idea… why don’t we teach people to be responsible for themselves, and educate them on not engaging in sexual practices that put them at risk. Or is that too much like teaching abstinence to teenagers… just no fun. We don’t need abstinence taught, we simply tell young women where the abortion clinics are, we get the Government to pay for it, and don’t require parental consent.

Instead of modifying and mutilating the human body, which regardless of your stance on a creator, a God, or evolution, you have to admit that there is some pretty intelligent design behind it, why don’t we simply modify our actions. Teach people about the responsibilities that come along with sexual maturity. Teach about the weight of the decision that teenagers are making, and then teach them about their options.

A real danger in the logic of circumcision as a way to avoid contracting AIDS is going on all over Africa. Thousands of men are opting to be cut, so they can engage in dangerous sexual practices, thinking that they are safe, but they are not. AIDS and HIV rates in Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe around 15-20% of adults are infected with HIV.

Giving people a false sense of security, instead of real evidence based education on prevention, will simply lead to more infected people, and a greater epidemic.
